National History Day regional competition PRA award winners

Prospect Ridge Academy was well represented over the weekend at the annual National History Day regional competition, held at Crownpointe Academy on Saturday.

The Miners had 10 students competing on Saturday and had six projects earn top-3 finishes, which qualified those students to go to the National History Day state competition on Saturday, April 26. The state competition will be hosted at the University of Colorado Denver on the Auraria campus.

National History Day in Colorado is a social studies and literacy program that equips students in elementary, middle, and high school with the skills necessary to succeed in college and the real world. Students participate in a project-based learning curriculum that emphasizes critical reading and thinking, research, analysis, and the drawing of meaningful conclusions. Students complete these projects in groups or as individuals in one of five categories: documentary, paper, exhibit, performance, or website.

PRA sophomore Luke Haynes earned 1st place overall in the Senior Paper category — “Senior” categories are open to high school students — and was joined by a fellow Miner, junior Zoe Duran, who placed third in the category.

The duo of Reese Yoon and Tessa Marr earned 2nd place in the Senior Group Exhibit.

In the Senior Group Documentary category, PRA qualified two different groups for the state competition as Sophia Cherpak and Addy McOlde placed 2nd overall and the tandem of Ashley Dinges and Sarah Sellers took 3rd place.

PRA sophomore Audrey Anderson also added a 3rd place finish in the Senior Individual Exhibit category to earn her spot at next month’s NHD state competition.

Contest schedule information for the NHD state competition will be released online on Monday, April 21. First and second place winners from the state competition will advance to compete in Nationals at the University of Maryland, College Park in June.
