Crepuscular. Lobectomy. Schism. These are the types of words you could expect to see at the District Spelling Bee that took place on Saturday, February 8 at The Studio School in Northglenn.
Prospect Ridge Academy is proud to have taken four fantastic spellers to this year’s District Spelling Bee. Three of those students (Reece Blair, Aiden Orozco, and Reyansh Tandon) made it to the top 14. As a result, they will be advancing to the online qualifying test that takes place on Thursday, February 20. From there, the top 15-20 spellers in the district will advance to the oral rounds at Storm Hall on the University of Denver campus on Saturday, March 8, 2025.
Earlier in the school year, PRA hosted an Elementary Spelling Bee and a Middle School Spelling Bee. The first and second place winners of each Spelling Bee completed a written spelling test. The 30 top-scoring students in the district who took that test qualified for the District Spelling Bee, which included all four of the PRA first and second place winners for elementary and middle school.
Carrie Kelly, one of the PRA K8 Spelling Bee Sponsors, said of the District Spelling Bee, “I was really, really proud of our students because they asked all the good questions.”
During the District Bee, students asked about the origin, definition, and alternative pronunciations of words, as well as to hear them used in a sentence.
“When you don’t have to put so much cognitive energy into the accuracy of the words, then you end up having better comprehension,” Kelly said, referencing the role spelling plays in reading fluency.
PRA is excited to see where these students go from here. Go Miners!
