Welcome to 2nd Grade!

Hi Everyone! I am so excited to start another school year here at PRA! This will be my eighth year teaching 2nd graders and my eighth year at PRA! It has been such an awesome experience to be here since day one! Teaching 2nd graders has been so fun and I cannot wait to see all of the growth our kiddos are going to make this year! :)
I grew up in Southern California and have wanted to become a teacher since I was little. It is such a privilege to be able to do what I love! I graduated with my BA in Elementary Education from Chapman University and decided I wanted to pursue my graduate degree. I thought it would be a fun experience to leave California and earn my degree in another state. I have always loved visiting Colorado, so it seemed like the perfect place to make that transition. I earned my MA in Curriculum Studies from the University of Northern Colorado and then started teaching at PRA. I am so happy that I decided to try a new place. Colorado has become home now. :)
When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and adorable dog. :) I also love hiking, exploring, and traveling to new places.
Here's to a wonderful year of learning and fun!

Week of 1/14-1/18

Hi All,
I hope you are doing well and getting adjusted back into the routine of second grade. :) It has been so great seeing all of the kids and hearing how awesome their breaks were. We have spent our short week practicing routines and starting to learn fun new things.
This upcoming week will be filled with lots of learning. We will be starting a new green pattern and also red words. From now on, the class will come home with three red words in their planners each week. Thank you for taking the time to help them memorize these words, as they do not follow a spelling pattern that they can rely on.
Here are our important dates this week:
1/14 = Box Tops Collection Begins
1/16 = Character Assembly
1/17 = Core Knowledge Night
(5:00-7:00 pm)
Have a great weekend and please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. :)

We will also continue to focus on subtraction, simple machines, and start to talk about the War of 1812.
Here are our important dates this week:
1/7 = PD Day
1/8 = Assessment Testing

Have a GREAT Winter Break!

Hi All!
I hope you are already enjoying the winter break! THANK YOU so much to all of our incredible parents that helped donate supplies and food, plan and create, and run our amazing winter party yesterday! It was the perfect way to end the semester together and the class had the best time! Thank you for your help and support! It would not have been possible without you! :)
I will be sending another post when we return from the break about what we will be up to in 2nd grade. Until then, please make sure you have signed your kiddo up for assessment testing. Also, I hope you all enjoy the time off with family and friends and have an incredible and happy holiday season!

Week of 11/26-11/30

Happy Thanksgiving Break!
The class had an awesome week before break and are hopefully already enjoying the time off!
If you would like to continue to have your child practice reading and math next week, I would encourage you to ask them about Freckle. Freckle is a website, or app, that we have set up and use daily in our classroom. Each student has their own personal account that gives them individualized lessons and practice based on their performance every time they use the program. If you are not already utilizing it at home, all you have to do is type in Their student login is their first name and then first initial of their last name. The password is ex7hsq. This is a great way for them to read and practice their math facts in an engaging way. It is not a requirement to use Freckle at home too, just a suggestion. :)
We have also posted some reading passages and corresponding comprehension questions under our reading class link. Feel free to use those resources at home, too.
When we return from break we will be learning a new green pattern and red words. Please look for that in their planners after the break. We will also be starting a new social studies unit, The Constitution, and science unit, Simple Machines. The class is eager to start these fun topics!
We have a lot happening when we return, so here are the important dates:

11/28 = PJ Birthday Celebration for November Birthdays
11/29 = Field Trip to the DMNS
(Please be sure to sign and return the permission slip that was sent home. Also, please send in the $7 for the trip. Students will need to bring a sack lunch and wear their tie-dye shirt that day.)
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I hope you and your families enjoy the extra time with friends and family and have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Classroom Volunteer Link

I have attached the classroom volunteer link to the previous post. Please see that link and sign up to help in math or reading throughout this year if you would like. Thank you in advance for your help! :)

Week of 11/12-11/16

They learned about our new character trait this week, wonder, and are excited to recognize when they are demonstrating it. I encourage you to ask them what it means and how they want to show it.
Thank you for all of your support with Miner Mania as well! It is a great day to get to know other kids in the school and work together to help our community. They have been looking forward to this opportunity for a long time, so thank you for sending them to school prepared to participate.

Parent Teacher Conference Agenda

Hi Everyone!
I hope you are doing well! Here is a blurb about what we plan on covering with you and your student on Thursday for conferences. Please read below, and I look forward to seeing you then!
The 2nd Grade Team wanted to inform you about the conference agenda.  Please know that we would like to go over your questions and concerns in regards to this semester.  From there, we would like to focus on what we see happening in the classroom rather than fixating on iReady and PALS.  Following that, we would like the opportunity to problem solve, as a team, areas of growth we have observed academically or behaviorally with your student.  We also want students to have the experience of explaining to you the choices they are making in class and the results of those choices.  Having students take accountability over their learning is paramount to the rest of their academic career. This is just a reminder that this is an opportunity for our students to develop more of a growth mindset and own their learning.
Thank you!
