English Language Learners
What is ELL/ELD?
The goal of language acquisition support services for English Language Learners (ELLs) in Adams 12 Five Star Schools is to promote students’ learning of both social and academic English, while also being given opportunities to learn grade-level content. This goal is achieved through the use of English Language Development (ELD) instruction as part of an ELL’s first best instruction. ELD is designed to promote language development in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing and ELD instruction is based on the Colorado English Language Proficiency (CELP) Standards. ELD instruction is provided by highly qualified teachers. Additionally, it is the district's expectation that all K-12 instructional teachers develop teaching skills in order to help ELLs learn and succeed. This includes providing ample and appropriate opportunities for language development as well as sheltering grade-level content in such a way as to make it comprehensible to ELLs.
How are students identified?
Students new to the Adams12 school district, including Prospect Ridge Academy, are identified by the Home Language Survey (HLS) that is completed during the registration process.
