Hi there! My name is Sara Bacon and I teach 6th Grade Language Arts and MS Creative Writing. This is my second year at PRA and I have loved every minute of it! When I’m not in the classroom, I can usually be found reading the latest fantasy or sci-fi series, writing a short story, cuddling with my cat Nova, or enjoying an iced coffee.
6th Grade Language Arts Curriculum
In 6th Grade LA, we follow the Core Knowledge sequence as we dive into world mythology, abridged versions of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Mark Twain’s The Prince and The Pauper, and Laura Hillenbrand’s Young Readers adaptation of Unbroken. Units are structured around these primary texts with integrated writing, grammar, and vocabulary instruction. Throughout the year, students will produce several works of formal and informal writing including a quest narrative, literary analysis essay, persuasive business letter, and daily journal entries.
MS Creative Writing
During this semester-long course, students will engage in various genre, author, and technique studies to inspire their own creativity in writing. As we study different topics, students will create many original works over the course of the semester and have ample opportunities for peer feedback and revision during the writers' workshop process. At the end of the semester, students will select 3-5 pieces of original writing to revise and polish for their final portfolio.
