Happy Summer!

💖 Dear Parents,

It was a pleasure having your child in my class this year. We learned so many things and progressed in so many ways since we met in August. As this school year comes to an end, I return your child to you, the same child I met at the beginning of the year, but a few inches taller, a few pounds heavier, and a remarkable year wiser.

It has been an absolute privilege to see minds and hearts grow in first grade this year. Together we have laughed, played, learned, created, and enjoyed this year to the fullest.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for an amazing year at PRA. The support from the parents and Miner community has made school my favorite place to be. When we had to adapt and leave school, I could not have asked for a better group of students and parents to navigate Distance Learning with.

I will remember this group of students forever. Their big personalities, bright minds, and loving hearts made this year memorable and inspiring. Like many of you, I wish we could slow down the clock and keep your kids in first grade just a little bit longer. I am excited to see how your child continues to grow and thrive in second grade. I can’t wait to see all of the amazing things they will accomplish in the future.

Wherever they go, whatever they do, whoever they become, I will always remember them in my first grade class. Have a wonderful summer and please stay in touch!

💖 Love,

Miss Wobschall

Important Updates: May 1, 2020

Hello first grade families,

I hope you had a wonderful week! This is a lot of information, but please read the whole update thoroughly - many of your questions are answered!

Assessment Days
  • Next week there will only be three days of Distance Learning (Mon-Wed). On the second page of the Plan, there will be detailed directions for completing three at-home assessment tasks. Feel free to complete these tasks on your own schedule and plan to finish all by next Sunday, May 10 at 5pm.
  • Students should complete these tasks all by themselves. To replicate the school environment as closely as possible, please do not assist your child with any of the work or answer clarifying questions. If parents help, then these assessments will not be useful. We would like results to be as accurate as possible so your child's 2nd grade teacher can plan how to meet their academic needs. Please also be sure ALL reference materials are put away.
  • If your child asks for help, encourage them to “try their best” or “give their best guess.” Below is a brief version of the directions from the Plan so you can begin to process and prepare.

iReady (Math only for 1st grade, no Reading)

  • Time: Takes about 2-2.5 hours total, should be split into 30-45 minute chunks with breaks (test open Thurs. through Sun. night)
  • Materials: Blank scratch paper, pencil, headphones to hear questions
  • Keep in mind: This test is adaptive, so students may get questions about skills we haven't taught. They should make their best guess.
  • Log-in Username: Uppercase initials + Student ID (e.g. KW1234567)
  • Log-in Password: ! + birthday (e.g. !01012013)
Opinion Paragraph Writing Sample
  • Time: 30 minutes - split into 10 min. (planning) and 20 min. (write/edit/draw)
  • Materials: prompt, video explanation, blank opinion plan, and lined paper (on learning plan).
  • To turn in: Email a clear photo or scan of both (1) the plan and (2) the full paragraph hand-written - not typed
RAZ Reading Assessment
  • Time: 5-10 minutes total
  • Log-in: regular RAZ Kids login - the assignment will pop up when you log in starting Monday
  • Keep in mind: There are three parts to be completed in one sitting: record the first reading of a new passage, record a retell of the passage, then answer comprehension questions

Have a great weekend! If you have any questions regarding assessments, please reach out anytime.

Check out the PRA Virtual Scholastic Book Fair - workbooks for summer, leveled readers, picture and chapter books - shipped to your home! Don't forget to order school supplies for next year!

Important Updates: April 24, 2020

Hello first grade families,

I hope you all had a great week. I've been so impressed with the work I am seeing. Thank you for helping your kids stay on track by using the strategies and skills we have been building throughout the year. A few reminders and updates:

Math Learning Activities

Please make sure your child is completing the learning activity as demonstrated in the lesson videos. Every problem should have a complete number bond, and either a tens/ones picture or number line. Students should be solving problems completely & correctly every time to prepare for 2nd grade.

Spelling Test

If your child gets less than 7 words correct on the spelling test, please review the concept with them and practice spelling words. The concepts we are including now are all review, and students should have them mastered.

RAZ Kids Recording

Please help your child choose a book, spend 2-3 days reading it, take the quiz, and send their "final read" to me to review (one recording per week). Here is a new, 2-min tutorial on How to Record on RAZ Kids. Please focus on smooth, fluent reading and strong comprehension.

Face-to-Face Time

It is so important that I “see” your child at some point every week! If they decide not to join the social time (3:30-4:00) during Office Hours, please have them post on Flipgrid at least once! If neither of these opportunities works for your family, you can reach out to me to schedule a different time for your child to check in!

Assessment Days

We will still have assessment days as scheduled, from home. We are still working through logistics, but students will likely have one math and one reading assessment to complete at some point on 5/7 and 5/8.

Take care,

Miss Wobschall

Distance Learning: April 20-24, 2020

Good evening!

Here is the Weekly Learning Plan. Please let me know if you need help adjusting for your family. As a reminder, all relevant login information is listed in Miss Wobschall's Favorite Distance Learning Resources.

Please note that this week, instead of emailing me your child's math page, I'd like it to be turned in to this Math Homework Folder. You must be logged in to your child's PRA account to access and drop the file in the folder. Thank you for your patience as we try this new way to submit work!

As always, I am available via email during regular school hours 8:15-3:15. I ask that you please look at my Distance Learning website tab before reaching out, as I've posted everything you need. On Wednesday, I will send a link to your child's PRA email account with the link for our live video Google Hangout. I'd encourage students to participate in our class Flipgrid page to stay connected to classmates.

Important Updates: April 17, 2020

Hello first grade families!

I hope you had a great week and stayed warm in this spring, Colorado snow! A couple of quick updates/reminders for you:

PD Day

Friday, April 24, 2020 is a professional development and staff work day. Assignments will still be given for distance learning, however teachers will not be available for parent meetings and email responses may be slightly delayed.

Work Due Today

Today, students have 3 assignments due: (1) math worksheet page emailed to Miss W, (2) spelling test completed on Google form, (3) weekly learning log completed on Google form. Kudos if you also had your child send me a recording on RAZ Kids!

RAZ Kids Recording

I would love to hear your child read each week! Please help your child choose a book, spend 2-3 days reading it, take the quiz, and send their "final read" to me to review. Here is a new, 2-min tutorial on How to Record on RAZ Kids. You’ll know I received their recording when I’ve sent them a message with bonus stars. I will move them up a level when I see them read books fluently, and get at least 90% on the quiz.

Face-to-Face Time

It is so important that I “see” your child at some point every week! If they decide not to join the social time (3:30-4:00) during Office Hours, please have them post on Flipgrid at least once!

Sending Assignments to Miss W

A couple families have said that they’d like an easier way to share their child’s work with me via email, so I made a quick, 30-sec tutorial on How to Scan Documents on iPhone/iPad (using this method the pictures won’t get mixed in to your photo library).

As always, feel free to reach out if you need anything! I will post the Weekly Learning Plan by 5:00 on Sunday evening.

Miss Wobschall

Distance Learning: April 13-17, 2020

Good afternoon, and Happy Easter to those of you who celebrate! :)

Here is the Weekly Learning Plan. There are some optional activities listed for students who may need additional tasks. Please let me know if you need help adjusting for your family. As a reminder, all relevant login information is listed in Miss Wobschall's Favorite Distance Learning Resources.

As always, I am available via email during regular school hours 8:15-3:15. I ask that you please look at my Distance Learning website tab before reaching out, as I've posted everything you need.

On Wednesday, I will send a link to your child's PRA email account with the link for our live video Google Hangout. The first half is reserved for Q&A, but at 3:30 kids can join just to say hello! I'd encourage students to participate in our class Flipgrid page to stay connected to classmates.

Important Updates: Friday, April 10, 2020

Hello first grade families!

I hope distance learning went more smoothly this week. You all have done a wonderful job being flexible, asking questions, and adjusting to being a teacher! Here are some FAQ's and clarifications based on your feedback:

ASSIGNMENTS DUE

Try to get through as much of the plan as possible. Specials are optional. This week, the only thing due is the Learning Log. Starting next week, the following will be due on Friday (and marked in green on the plan):

  • Learning log (submit Google Form) - made it more kid-friendly
  • Spelling test (submit Google Form, only open Friday 8:15-3:45pm)
    • Please put materials away before starting. There will be a video of the words being read. Students can type the words into the form as they listen and then submit.
  • Photo of one math page, listed on plan (email photo to teacher)

PLANS POSTED

Based on parent feedback, elementary staff decided plans will now go up Sundays by 5pm (posted on webpage), giving you more time to prep/plan!

NO-PRINT OPTIONS

All activities on the plan can be copied onto plain paper. Math problems can be solved on paper or whiteboard. You can hand-draw writing plans and then write on plain or notebook paper. Whatever works for you!

MORE BOOKS

Please log into RAZ Kids to practice reading daily - I set your child's level. If your child records their reading, I can listen to it and change the level. Epic is also a great resource. Scholastic has a pop-up shop to order books to your home. Class code: TJGKN

RECORDED vs LIVE

Staff have decided to use recorded videos to accommodate the most families. Please use Flipgrid to keep in touch and schedule virtual playdates on your own! Our only live sessions will be optional office hours on Wednesdays (questions from 3-3:30 and social time from 3:30-4). If you download this Grid View extension, kids can see everyone at the same time!

Distance Learning: April 6-10, 2020

Good morning! :)

Here is the Weekly Learning Plan. This is a full week plan, so it looks a bit longer, however the work should be spread out over five days. Please notice that there are some optional activities listed for students who may need additional tasks.
