Week 20: 1/22 - 1/25

HOLA families & Happy Friday (aka, 3-day-weekend Eve)!

We had an awesome field trip today checking out mummies, dinosaur bones, gems & minerals, the human body, and more! They are exhausted but I hope they have some really fun memories. This was a great field trip and I think the kids would love to go back if you ever get the chance.

I'm sure you all noticed that your child brought home their math workbook yesterday. This is to stay at home. We've moved into our second workbook of the year. Please encourage your child to complete any blank pages for extra practice. I also sent home Red Word Rings with your child's specific red words to practice (see prior email).

Please also remember to check your child's planner daily for notes - no note is good news - they will only have a note if they lost 3 cubes. We also decided  in our class meeting (by brainstorming and voting) that students will lose one minute of recess for each cube they lose so that they can take a specific moment to think about their behavior. Thanks for your support from home!

Week 16: Dec 10-15

Hello and Happy Fri-yay!

This was a quick week for us - very busy! We have started a new math strategy called "Find 10" that has been difficult for many of the kids. Any practice you can do at home would be great! It's also another reason to practice math facts - automaticity would make this new strategy more efficient.

I sent out a new reading log in Thursday folders yesterday. Please note that this reading log isn't for a grade, it is to keep the kids accountable for their reading at home. My hope is that with something tangible to fill out, kids will be more excited to discuss books with classmates on Friday mornings. Your child should know their reading level, but if you have any questions about finding good-fit books, feel free to reach out! The expectation for first graders is still 15 minutes, 4 times per week. :)

Week 15: Dec 3-7

Welcome back!

We've had quite the week back at school! The kids have been emotional and exhausted, likely due to the sad news we had upon our return. We finished out our week strong, starting a few new things and all of the kiddos had great attitudes today. Thank you for your support, our community is so strong at PRA and in times like these I am very grateful.

Please return the Vision/Hearing Screening permission slip for your child by Monday! The screening is on Tuesday.

Freckle: Math (and ELA)
Please log onto our online platform Freckle and practice reading and math via the computer website or download the free app for tablets. They log in with their first name and last initial, plus our class code (wobsct). They glued the login info into their planners. It's a ton of fun, kids can do it mostly independently, and the questions adapt to your child's level.

This is especially great as math fact practice homework. Our end-of-first grade expectation is facts to 10 are fluent, with a push goal of facts to 20. Please have your child complete the "From Your Teacher" section each week (the button with the chicken). For now I will add one short assignment every Friday. After this is done, your child is free to complete any other content areas games within Freckle.

Week 14: 11/26-11/30

Happy Thanksgiving!

We had an awesome week leading up to our break. The kids made a crystal garden in Science lab, we talked about what we are thankful for in writer's workshop, and the kiddos rocked their crazy hair and socks to end the week.

Going into the break, I sent a few practice pages home to work on. Please note that this work is not required, however I would encourage students to practice one or more of these things over break to stay fresh and become more confident. Students will receive a sticker for every completed page they return.
  • Red Word Assessment: Students were tested on their red word spelling knowledge. To be on grade level, students should know how to read and write all 45 of these red words. If your child missed words on this test, it would really help if you practiced those words at home.
  • Math Packets: These packets are specific to your child's current math achievement and they should be able to complete them independently. I would encourage your child to complete these if they have received any 2's on Chapter Tests recently.
  • Handwriting Pages: Students who still reverse letters, write too big or with big spaces, use uppercase letters, or have disorganized handwriting would benefit from these.
  • Book Review: Students can write and draw about the beginning, middle, and end of a book or audible book.
  • Hamburger Paragraph: Students write a five-sentence paragraph about anything they want. Practice COPS and using descriptive words.
  • Race to 120/ABC Race: Ask your child to write their lower and uppercase alphabet (they should be able to complete without errors). Ask them to write their numbers as high as they can go (they should make it to 20 without error).

As a class, we are working hard to practice good self-control at school, ask your kiddo what their goal is! Also please help encourage your first grader to problem solve. This includes working out conflicts, talking about feelings, and being self-sufficient. We are working on solving our problems instead of tattling.
